The main challenge was to achieve a clean architectural finish. That meant no exposed bolts, brackets, or fasteners. Every steel connection had to be hidden while still meeting safety, load-bearing, and constructability standards.
Traditional bolted methods were not acceptable. Instead, we developed a welded system that allowed for both shop fabrication and on-site erection—without exposing any hardware to the public.
Our Expertise
To meet both structural and architectural goals, we designed a fully welded roof frame. All joints were polished to maintain a sleek appearance. Instead of standard connections, we used internal custom solutions such as:
- Locator plates hidden inside steel tubes for accurate positioning during erection
- Alignment bent plates on headers to hold framing elements in place during assembly
- Concealed locking mechanisms that provided strength while staying invisible
We worked closely with the fabricator and field team throughout the process. Every detail was coordinated to ensure accurate fit-up without the need for rework. Our internal QA process confirmed that all welds met both the design intent and tolerance requirements.
The Result
The completed viewing platform blends perfectly into the zoo’s environment, offering clean lines and a modern aesthetic with no visible fasteners. Thanks to careful planning and coordination, the installation process went smoothly—without the need for field modifications.
