The Challenge
Because the bottom of the steel platform was so close to the roof, conventional fillet welds weren’t possible. We adapted by switching to single-bevel CJP welds with backing bars.
Later, the EOR added T-shaped moment plates for triple-moment connections, adding even more complexity for fabricators and erectors.
The biggest challenge of all came late in the process: crane access was ruled out, and all steel pieces had to fit in a passenger elevator. This involved dividing beams into smaller sections—some as short as six feet—while maintaining full structural strength .
Our Expertise
This project highlighted the value of anticipating design and logistical challenges. We’ve since implemented a client questionnaire to identify issues like assembly size and delivery constraints early on, saving time and preventing costly rework.
The result
Steel detailing isn’t just about drawings—it’s about problem-solving and adaptability. This steel platform detailing project, though challenging, underscored the importance of communication, collaboration, and expertise in delivering seamless results in structural steel detailing .
