ESD Solutions provided steel platform detailing for a rooftop terrace on a penthouse building—initially viewed as a routine job. But as the project progressed, it became clear that success would depend on creative problem-solving and precise coordination.
The Challenge
Several unexpected issues emerged during the detailing phase:
Late in the process, crane access was denied, and all steel components had to fit inside a passenger elevator. This required dividing larger beams into smaller sections—some as short as six feet—while preserving full structural integrity.
Low clearance between the roof and platform made conventional fillet welds impossible. We switched to single-bevel CJP welds with backing bars to maintain strength and constructability.
The engineer of record (EOR) added T-shaped moment plates for triple-moment connections—introducing further complexity for the fabrication and erection teams.
Our Expertise
To meet these challenges, we:
- Adapted weld detailing to meet field constraints without compromising performance
- Carefully coordinated splice locations for modular beam segments
- Verified load paths and connection strength for segmented framing
- Maintained close communication with the fabricator to ensure each piece could be transported, lifted, and assembled efficiently
This project also prompted us to develop a pre-project questionnaire, helping us identify logistical limitations early—such as delivery size restrictions and on-site access.
The result
A structurally sound platform delivered without crane access
Fully compliant welds and moment connections in tight rooftop conditions
On-time delivery, despite design changes and site limitations
A more efficient planning process for future rooftop detailing projects
This project proves that steel platform detailing for rooftop terraces requires more than just technical accuracy—it demands foresight, flexibility, and clear communication at every stage.
