ESD Solutions recently delivered a rooftop steel support system for air ducts, integrating custom frames with existing roof beams and new HVAC ductwork. Although the structural drawings showed only basic outlines, we carefully analyzed HVAC plans to determine duct routing and precise elevations.
The Challenge
What began as a standard support detailing job quickly turned complex.
- There was no MEP model available, so we modeled all air ducts manually.
- The MEP contractor made multiple design changes, which required constant model revisions.
- Actual field conditions differed from the beam layouts shown on the drawings, forcing redesigns.
- Each revised support required EOR reapproval after “As Approved Noted” (AAN) markups.
As a result, the project demanded full flexibility, proactive coordination, and attention to every mounting detail.
Our Expertise
To manage this complexity, we took full ownership of the detailing process:
- Modeled the entire duct layout based on plan views and HVAC specifications
- Updated support frames after each duct or site layout change
- Coordinated all anchor points and elevations with the structural framing
- Worked directly with the EOR to get revised layouts approved while maintaining design intent
By staying responsive and solution-oriented, we ensured everything would work both in the model and on-site.
The Result
The completed rooftop steel support system fit seamlessly into the existing structure and provided strong, reliable support for the ducts. Despite changing requirements and real-world obstacles, the project was a success—both in the shop and in the field.
